OCR Processing

Abergower has been involved in many historical and archival projects that have required extensive use of OCR processing as part of the final deliverable.
In many instances where the source material is good the standard of digitisation is high and the material is type face the use of standard professional application packages such as ABBYY Finereader Professional will produce a very high standard of OCR output from original material.

Where in the majority of instances where the original material has one of the following elements then OCR can be a challenging process.

  • Original material is hand written
  • Original material has been previously scanned poorly
  • Original material is in poor condition
  • Original material layout of text and data is non-standard
  • Multiple languages on the same page
  • Specialised material such as magazines and newspapers with columns and caption headings

Abergower in this instance uses its expertise in a number of ways to design and implement a system that will meet with the requirements of the client

This will often have a multiple processing approach using the most appropriate systems and processes to achieve the desired result for the client

Often this will include the following key elements:

  • Use of commercially available OCR application packages
  • Use of specialised OCR packages for specific types of original material (magazines and newspapers)
